Eldoret Leg Produces First Safaricom Staff Winner

Safaricom’s Nyanza Regional Sales Manager, Alice Awiti, was crowned the overall winner of the sixth leg of the Safaricom Golf Tour in a thrilling event held at the Eldoret Golf Club over the weekend.

Playing off a handicap of 54, Awiti carded a total of 23 points in the first nine and 26 on the second nine, totaling 49 points, which saw her become the sixth overall winner securing her a slot for the grand finale in Vipingo.

“My win today was a big surprise, but a great one for my game. This is the first time I’m winning a tournament, and I am proud and motivated to work even harder. Though my performance was good, I experienced several challenges in my putting, which I will work on as I prepare to compete in the grand finale,” said Ms Awiti.

She fended off challengers Anthony Yano, Sylvia Tanui and Nilam Shah, in a four-ball tournament holing a birdie on the seventh, eleventh and fifteenth holes with three pars to emerge the tournament’s winner.

Saturday’s senior event drew 140 senior golfers from Rift Valley and its environs including the Nyanza and Western region counties of Kisumu, Bungoma, Kakamega and Trans Nzoia.

Awiti joins former caddie Cyprian Bundi, junior Golfer Leo Gitonga, Zain Manji, Lydia Jebichii and Simon Kimatu, who were the winners of the first five legs

In Sunday’s junior tournament, 11-year-old Marya Nyambura and 21-year-old Danny Chelogoi were crowned the champions. Nyambura, a grade six student at Rose of Sharon Academy, carded a total of 92 points to emerge the best girl while the home-based junior golfer Danny Chelogoi garnered a gross of 80 points to emerge the best boy.

“This is my second time participating in the Safaricom Golf Tour tournament. I first participated in the fifth leg at Machakos where I emerged second in my category. I am really impressed with my performance today. I thank Safaricom for this great platform and my parents for supporting me,” said Nyambura.

The Eldoret leg attracted 63 junior golfers from the region and its environs including the Nyanza and Western counties of Kisumu, Bungoma, Kakamega and Trans Nzoia. Another 53 aspiring juniors participated in the golf clinic.
