Machakos Golf Club is located in Machakos town, off Kangundo – Machakos road. It is a social place that was established in 1924. It has over 600 members and has a number of facilities for recreation including its lush golf course.
The course is scenic with a seasonal river running through the middle to a dam that supplies water for irrigating the greens, tees and fairways. The golf course went through a major change in 2007 where the former Browns were replaced by Greens which were done to USGA specification and planted with a Bermuda grass species that has adapted well to the local climatic conditions.
Thousands of maturing trees have been planted and line the fairways which are generously wide. In the dry season, the ball runs a lot making everybody a long hitter until the rains when suddenly handicaps take an uphill turn due to length.
The course hosts one of the most difficult par four hole’s, the 7th a 474 yard dogleg right monster with a carry of 300 yards to clear the corner, the second shot plays into the wind to a blind green that slopes away from you and is guarded by huge bunkers on either side.
The 8th hole, a 165 yard par three, has out of bounds along the left from tee to green. A huge high tree guards the right side leaving no room to hit the ball, many tournaments have been lost at this hole.
Generally the course is an experience to play for all golfers and is set at the bottom of very high hills that surround it like a fort.
